When styling hair use the best products and tools that work for you in order to achieve your desired look. With any style, it is important to keep in mind balance of your facial features and the health of your hair. It is best to know how to learn a product. How much to use and where to place it in your hair (roots, midway or ends)?

Every style requires adding grit and texture either wet or dry, depending on the product and the style to be achieved. This will help to keep the style in longer as well as protect the hair during hot thermal blow drys or flat ironing.

Here are a few tips with product usage:

Updos-begin with dry hair (pre-moussed or use a sea salt spray for added texture). Tease and spray at the root area for extra support when styling. My recommendation is to wash the hair a day before so that the hair is not squeaky clean but if it tends to get oily, than wash day of! Updos require sculpting techniques so use products to de-frizz and help smooth down the hair.

Blow drys and flat ironing- use a heat protectant and/or a sealant. This will help to eliminate split ends and breakage. Blow drys; Moose and root boosts at the roots helps to expand and give lift. Flat ironing; use a serum in moderation when wet and reapply lightly once the flat iron is done for added shine and softness. Make sure the ends have complete coverage as well, as they will be very noticeable with flat ironing.

Waves and layers -require more definition and shine to enhance the movement of their shape so use a gel, palm aid, or a serum to accentuate the definition in the hair.

Extensions - consider the same methods to protect the hair and also to increase the finishing touches even though extensions don’t produce heat from the scalp, they can still be damaged as with your own hair.

Use a finishing spray for additional hold and shine to any style. This will depend on the texture of your hair so choose a product that will not weigh down your hair or will not make it too oily.

How to choose the right product? Trial and error but most stylists working with your hair will know what to recommend for you based on your texture.

Here are a few recommendations for hair textures:

    • Fine hair- use either or a combination of a root boost, moose (2-3 gulf ball sizes), sea salt spray (I prefer on dry hair, it comes out better this way), or a dry shampoo for texture

    • Med hair- the same as fine hair but can be applied in moderation

    • Thick hair-since the hair is thick use more of the mentioned products above at the roots rather than the ends, so the hair does not get weighed down toward the ends.
